An application simulating a renewable energy (RES) auction
The new Law on Renewable Energy Sources (adopted in Poland on 20 February 2015) brings investments from this sector into a new reality. Until now, such installations received additional revenues regardless of their quality. Currently, investments have to compete with each other in terms of quality in order to win the renewable energy auction and realise the return required by investors. The growth of renewables is changing the energy picture both for companies that sell energy and for energy consumers. The most frequently asked question in the energy market is: what will the auction price be? As it depends on the behaviour of auction participants, for the time being one can only build scenarios and guesses.
Together with the Polish Renewable Energy Association and the Domański Zakrzewski Palinka law firm, PwC has decided to abandon scenario writing and check what will happen at the auctions by conducting a RES auction simulation. The event is unique - a year before the actual RES auction is held by the Energy Regulatory Office, the simulation gave investors the opportunity to test their strategies and verify price hypotheses in RES auctions.
We have been engaged to create a bilingual online platform, ZieloneAukcje.pl, which will allow the organisers to simulate a renewable energy auction, and the participants to learn how to take part.
Using wireframes, we defined the data scope, use cases and designed the interface of the RES auction simulator.
The interface of the web application was designed in accordance with the PwC brandguide.
We connected email notifications and prepared a panel for the client to manage communication with auction participants.
Entities from other countries - China, Western Europe - are interested in the new regulation on the Polish market. We prepared an effective environment for translating the platform's interface into English. We carried out tests and launched the application.
During the operation of the platform, we supported PwC in handling the actions - accepting payments and settlements with users, monitoring application availability and performance.
The results of Poland's first trial RES auction were discussed during a webinar organised by PwC, PWEA and Domański Zakrzewski Palinka law firm.
